  1. Claire Cock-Starkey’s piece on “6 of the World’s Most Mysterious Standing Stones” left out what is probably the most significant – the pillars of Gobekli Tepe in southern Turkey, believed to be over 11,000 years old (ref NGM June 2011).

      Thanks for your comment. Lots of sites were considered for the article and Gobekli Tepe is indeed a fascinating site but as it is quite widely accepted to be a temple and covers quite a large area it was not considered “mysterious” enough. Were it a list of the world’s most awe-inspiring ancient archaeological sites it may well have made it on there! The nature of these rather subjective lists means that they are never going to cover all the bases, but hopefully just inspire people to look more closely at some sites they may not have known about.
